### Issues with WeBelieve

Arguments about the value of death
- Eric: Without death, evolution doesn't work
- Eric: Wanting to make our minds more permanent and continue to use resources is greedy and sinful
- Ben: We come from different emotional starting points and degrees of attachment to different things: I value consciousness more, while you value diversity of forms in the physical world
- Eric: I understand the point of view that consciousnesses are infinitetly valuable. Mine is infinitely valuable to me, but Gaia's viewpoint is that consciousnesses should be sacrificed in the name of diversity, evolution, Life and I think her point of view is the more important one; one which I am willing to sacrifice myself to serve.
- In high school I was willing to give up reproduction in favor of immortality, but my viewpoint has shifted
- Ben: I don't want to take the libertarian singularitarian line that "there's plenty of space so let's just expand into it indefinitely"
- Eric: That viewpoint has some merit as one of several "gears" to switch one's mind between.
- Eric: But the problem with the idea that there is plenty of space comes from the difference between exponential curves and geometric curves. Assuming you can't exceed lightspeed, the volume of space available to you at a given time is limited to a sphere with radius c * the time you've spent expanding. But that sphere, as well as the quantities of mass and energy inside it, grows at a linear rate, while biological growth is exponential; exponential curves always outstrip linear curves. So until we get an FTL drive, we only have an *illusion* that there's plenty of space.
- Natural selection vs. personal growth vs. simulated evolution
- Eric: Natural selection provides more unexpected explorations of possibility leading to greater diversity than the "evolution" of individual minds
- Ben: Middle ground: simulated evolution can go much faster than natural selection
- Eric: If you don't create a physical version of the thing you're evolving in your simulation, you won't get a result with interesting properties in the physical world
### Evaluation
- Ben ... Ideological arguments make me nervous. This one wasn't nearly as bad as arguing with a climate denier but ... Also I've missed spending time with Eric
- Eric ... I enjoyed the call ... I also enjoy being at the cottage, but it's also good to get back
