Winter Solstice
Moment of Solstice is 3:03 PM PST, 18:03 EST
Where
- If we go to the east side of the Cascades with the boys, we'll get 10 minutes of looking at the stars, if that
- Have the main celebration in Portland
- Have an adults-only trip afterward to somewhere fairly nearby, e.g. Crown Point
- Start planning now for a summer trip on a new moon to a dark, warm, location where we can sleep out under the stars
Who we're inviting
- Ben: My inclination has been to invite anyone who's interesting and interested
- Brandon: I've been thinking of these events as our time to do what we do without having to explain ourselves to others
- Eric: But the more we invite people in, the more people we'll have and the less explaining we'll need to do
- Brandon: I agree
- Ben's list so far:
- Hank (need to try again)
- Lion
- Lewis
- My parents
- Their friend Ken and Margaret from Goldendale (probably won't come to Portland)
- Jan Keller, a friend from Bioneers
- Others to invite:
- Windward people? (probably won't come to Portland)
- Jude (willing to come to Portland)
- Ted and Celeste
- Gus
What we're doing
- Fire? (at least candles, a yule log, maybe a Viventibus Galaxia plate)
- Maybe do two Sabbath rituals, the one from Viventibus Galaxia and the one from Genesis
- Psalm of Solstice (we could sing it instead of just listening to it)
- Talk about Deep Time and the SolSeed Cosmic Calendar
- Sequoia is dressing up as the Baby Universe; Ren and Shelley will also have roles
- http://www.patheos.com/blogs/allergicpagan/2011/12/29/winter-solstice-ritual/
- Holly King Mask: https://www.etsy.com/listing/107897469/the-holly-king-leather-mask-custom-hand?ref=market
- Ben likes Pagan Silent Night but not Pagan Joy to the World
- Stargazing?
Outreach
Interstellar
- On the one hand, this movie raises awareness about the idea of interstellar travel and space colonies being a good thing
- Are we seeing a tipping point in popular consciousness about space? If so, why, and what does the zeitgeist look like?
- On the other hand, it's all about fleeing to some other planet after this one gets broken
- So let's talk about other possible motivations/scenarios
- Human-centric vs. Life-centric
- Rosetta and Philae, Dawn (Ceres flyby in April 2015)
The Obligation
- Brandon would like Ben to compare and contrast Ben’s space elevator paper about motivations with the 6 different Endowments in The Obligation
Gatherings
- Pantheacon is a hotel-based convention in San Jose with about 2000 people and 13 tracks
- Next con is February 13-16, meaning we have to get a hotel room now
- John Halstead and Mark Green both consider it to be "home"
- Talking with people who believe in magic and participating in woo-woo rituals are probably part of the "cost of doing business" there
- Brandon talked with the organizer about getting a suite for Naturalistic Paganism, but that's not usually done for "new groups"
- John has apparently not established a presence for his group (of bloggers)
- Bioneers
- Hard-core environmentalist activists
- Not the “just say no” kind; they're all about the big world-changing projects people are doing to solve problems and make the world better
- Thought they also support holding actions to keep things from getting worse
- If they are into big visions like that, they might be willing to hear me out about space
- No filter for magical thinking (certainly people who do that there)
- Gaia Gathering: https://www.dropbox.com/s/04my427f6op0mv0/GG2015_poster.pdf?dl=0
- Space conferences: 100yss, NewSpace, Contact
Chats vs. Skype
- Eric attended the Atheopagans' Sunday Chat
- It was a lot of fun, but kind of hard to follow (3 different streams on a single comment thread on Facebook)
- I felt like part of their group
- If we did this it would be good for new members, because it's not as big a commitment as Skype
Kindred Map
Brandon wants to make a conceptual map of kindred groups and how they intersect
- People could participate by making rank-ordered lists of values, and finding people and groups with similar lists
- You can also say what you think another group or person's values are (to explain why you feel aligned with them)
- Start with a spreadsheet, then build up to a graphical thing like a Venn diagram
- Brandon has more energy for this than for Kindred 2015 because he wants to get to know all these new contacts before inviting them to fly across the country
Eric observes that we might find a need to focus on one nexus of interest at a time, e.g. naturalistic religion (which has very little overlap with space)
- Maybe we could push the Spiritual Naturalist Society or somebody into organizing a Kindred event?
- Brandon doesn't have much interest in events that just target one cluster at a time, but admits that an event with us as the intersection probably isn't viable yet
Evaluation
- Brandon … Excited and enjoying SolSeed a lot right now
- Ben … I’m always sad when something we’ve been planning is looking like it's not going to happen … we’ve had Kindred 2010 that we were totally going to do … and now we’ve had Kindred 2015 that we were totally going to do (I even said we were going to work on it in the newsletter)
- Eric … I think it's a good idea to pull out now and wait until we really have the energy for the Kindred event we want … getting to know people who aren't tied strongly enough yet to come to an event like that, we may get to a point where we get that critical mass
