- Eric ... got lots of work done on renovations this week ... held a meeting of Overbrook Community Association Environment Committee which decided to start a big tree-planting campaign ... as a result I had to skip my SolSeed homework
- Ben ... it's over 60F here and there is sun coming through the clouds, and I'm feeling a little sick which might mean that I get to take a sick day off tomorrow

Equinox
Moment of Equinox: Thursday March 20, 11:57 EDT / 8:57 AM PDT
- Ottawa event: Friday night, March 21
- Eat at an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant
- Not doing the storytelling because the Saumur place is under renovation
- Portland celebration: Saturday night, March 22
- Meetup storytelling event set up for 5-7 PM at the Sanders
- Eric can read his story over Skype
- Ritual? Figure it out after we get the invitation out
- Separate Meetup earlier in the day for cleanup or tree-planting in SE Portland

3rd liturgical season
The third liturgical season runs from the spring equinox to mid-spring (approximately May 5th) and covers the period from the Cambrian explosion to the invention of trees in the Devonian?. Again what are the major advances of this period? Leaves, veins, roots, wood?
- The animals wouldn't be on land if the plants didn't colonize it first
- But this period extends through the Carboniferous, which is after the first amphibians
Here is Eric's draft of the opening ceremony for the Weekly Service Calls during this season:
We gather to mark the passing of a week To align our hearts as one.
Bare rock ... still ... bare rock. And then ... <gasp> ... Green!
Cells clump. Organs specialize. Life senses Sol. Structures harden. Forests grow. In the lush green forests, species are born. And for every species ... there was a story!
(Stand a tree cut out up (leafless but dendridic)
(As one person stands it up the others raise their hand and wiggle their fingers like a growing tree)
This is the story of how they came to be, these trees with whom we breathe!
(Breath deeply three times contemplating that the oxygen you are breathing in came from green plants)
First came the leaves, ?floating? leaves, the surfaces on which Sol's fire was captured!
(Pin or clip leaves to the tree cut out)
Next came the veins, organizers of resources, Both Xylem and Phloem, raising water and minerals, and storing sugar.
(I picture something with a syphon. A bowl of green coloured water with a plastic tube running up the tree and then down again and into another bowl on a lower shelf, suck on the tube, and the coloured water will flow up through the tree and then back down again and into the second bowl.)
- Ben's alternative: pour green water in one side of a U-shaped tube
- Eric suggests and N shaped tube so that the water comes out of the bottom which will be easier to capture the outpouring water in a bowl
- Brandon's alternative: capillary hose

Then came the roots! Digging deep, searching for minerals. Digging deep, anchoring stems fast.
(Add roots around the base of the tree cut out)
Finally, plants invented wood! Turning soft cells into tall trunks, Reaching high into the air, thickening the biosphere, Making 100 meters of air freely available to crawling and jumping animals.
(participants play musical sticks, and dance around the tree.)
Leaves. Veins. Roots. Wood.
(Squat and then, as you stand, spread your arms and fingers like a tree growing) (Motion of arms crossed to fingers splayed arms in the air)

Discussion
Ben: The third season is a beautiful homage to the Old Testament (the book Seeing Nature by Paul Krafel). The only improvements I might suggest would be to reference the term “The Upward Spiral” directly, and double-checking the science on when we think each innovation arose (I suspect roots may have arisen earlier than you suggest).
Evaluation
- Brandon ... I'm happy that we did this
- Ben ... I like the progress we made on the upcoming stuff that we got to get done. And I am looking forward to making a cardboard tree.
- Eric ... I'm excited about the Third Liturgical Season, and a little disappointed about the Ottawa Equinox event ... happy that some of the things in my house have started coming into better order
