In [[Biospheric Communionism]], a forest is any ecosystem in which the structure of the space occupied by the ecosystem is largely made up of biological organisms. In a rainforest, huge flowering trees make up the majority of the structure of the forest. In a tropical reef, coral animals make up the structure. In the future, very different organisms may exist who can create structures large enough to form ecosystems. These have been imagined by many people such as Freeman Dyson's Dyson Trees, or Gregory Benford's Leviathan and Moon Membrane. We can also imagine forests of ocean going trees networked together in order to protect themselves from waves, some specializing in anchoring the network, some specializing in keeping the network afloat, some specializing in creating fresh water, fixing nitrogen or producing sugar or protein, all trading their products within the network for the products of others. We can imagine forests spreading over glaciers and deserts, networking together and sharing resources over vast distances. Perhaps the ocean forest will specialize in producing fresh water from salt water and trading this water for minerals produced by desert forests.
