Check-in
- Ben … I have a headache and I’m trying to maintain my enthusiasm for this game jam where I’m going to be trying to make a game about building a community.
- Shawn … I’m tired and feeling a little overwhelmed with all the things going on (moving, product launched, class at PSU) … a lot going on right now
- Brandon … I read the book Juggling Elephants yesterday because I was feeling overwhelmed, and briefly felt less overwhelmed and more proactive
Opening Blessing
Life can feel like a circus sometimes, with things going on all over the place. May we find how to turn our circuses into delightful performances rather than chaotic unpleasing messes. --Blessed Be

Patron Foundation
Project Proposal https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vqQy5qh6OhVT7z1NOWZ6biZ5WdWqTemlo4aGvTL5hsY/edit?usp=sharing
Patreon is less about the creators and more about options for the givers. But as a non-profit, it could probably give more options to creators. The alternative Shawn is thinking of would be more about supporting knowledge creators/popularizers/educators. These people would be great Foundation participants. They are willing to read primary sources and then create new forms of sharing that information. By reaching out and including them and helping to support them we could create the relationships.
Disadvantages of Patreon:
- Minimum amount for each creator, I don't have enough money to deliver that minimum to everyone I want to support
- Reward system gives more to people who give a large amount briefly than people who give a smaller amount but stick with it over a long period
Solutions:
- Have a tool to distribute a giver's overall budget percentage-wise among many creators.
- Give the $100 reward once you've given a creator $100, regardless of how long it took you to do so.
Brandon has worked in this general vicinity and never got very far
- Awakening Science Foundation: Tried to bring donor-advised funds to small players
- Tithe some money into a fund that you could (help decide how to) allocate at any time
- Creates impetus for community research
- 2005 project about how to fund research for small and local stuff that isn't based on scaling up to industrial scale
- One problem: Brandon isn't diligent when working in a home office by himself
- Shawn has had similar experiences, even when working with others, if no one is pushing the team to be diligent
- Ben observes that having a shared SolSeed project would solve the problem of having to work by yourself
- Brandon: Real deadlines with consequences for failing to meet them help
Brandon wants some assurance that we have a recipe for success
- Shawn is more willing to go at it and fail, because this is well aligned with Shawn’s highest aspirations … worth pursuing no matter the outcome.
Moonument
Shawn was talking with Rico about perhaps changing from a collapse-focused Foundation. Hari Seldon didn’t say that the empire is going to collapse, we should build a foundation. He said, let’s create a Galactic Encyclopedia … he was able to attract a bunch of the key people and build something that was useful in a collapse. In that same vein I’ve thought about putting together as much as possible of the knowledge of humanity into a time capsule sort of thing and put it on the moon. It serves the same purpose as foundation … you have to build a library of knowledge (and maybe human DNA). The Lunar Time Capsule Monument aka “The Moonument.” If you could get together a good enough proposal, graphics, and inspirational video some people might say “That’s a great thing to do”.
- Pitch: In a million years, after a bunch of erosion and plate tectonics, we don't know what will be left of humanity and civilization on Earth, but anything we put on the Moon will probably be exactly where we left it. And we can build a beacon that makes it easy for anyone with intelligence to come and find it.
- Crowdsource it, maybe through the Patron Foundation
- Bring together historians, physicists, language people
- Brandon: Maybe resurrect Ignite Portland so we can talk about these crazy ideas

Evaluation
- Shawn … Good, I want to talk more about all the things … we always have so much to talk about … between the calls everyone gets caught up in their stuff so we don’t get to talk very much … looking forward to a longer form conversation (Ben says “like at the unconference”)
- Brandon … I enjoy this, it's fun … I'm glad you guys exist
- Ben … I am somewhat confused by Shawn wanting to be humble when he's bringing all this energy behind big exciting plans, such as the Moonument. Excited by that energy/ambition.
Closing Blessing
A circus is much more fun to watch than to create, but that doesn’t mean we the circus designers can’t have plenty of fun. May we combine our shared excitement with our skills and drive to make things really happen. -- Blessed Be
