Brandon divides unconventional people into two categories:
- Preconventional: People who never made it in the mainstream world
- They offer time and energy, but not conventional wisdom or financial resources
- Ben: But they might have other types of wisdom
- Postconventional: People who have been successful in the mainstream and know how to go back to it if needed
- They offer wisdom about working with the mainstream, resources, and time and energy if they no longer have mainstream jobs
- Brandon: There are many more preconventionals than postconventionals
- Ben: There may be more disaffected middle-class people, looking for ways to live differently from their mainstream lives, than you think
