Draft Bios for Earthseed

Ben

Ben Sibelman is an environmental activist, space enthusiast, software engineer, and amateur graphic designer. He's also a dedicant of the quasi-religious SolSeed Movement, which was inspired by Octavia Butler's fictional Earthseed religion and shares both its naturalistic perspective and its vision of taking root among the stars. Taking the Earthseed metaphor a step further, Ben imagines starships as seeds of Gaia, James Lovelock's theorized superorganism encompassing all Earthly life. Ben believes naturalistic religions will be crucial to ensuring a bright future on Earth and beyond, for humans and all kindred beings.

Brandon

Brandon Sanders grew up deeply immersed in Seventh-day Adventist subculture, but left the church after becoming an atheist in college. In 2005, a peak spiritual experience drove him to found the SolSeed Movement -- a fusion of the peak experience itself and the tenets of Octavia Butler’s Earthseed religion. Brandon holds a doctorate in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Rochester and lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife and their 6- and 3-year old boys. The Sanders family uses daily, weekly, and seasonal SolSeed practices to shape their lives.

Closing Blessing

Change is eternal. And all Lives are precious. Even ours. We should be unashamed to share the fullness of who we are, especially with people who share some of our highest aspirations. May we find many kindred spirits at the OEB event in June. -- Blessed Be
