A place in Portland
Shawn: Reading notes from Unconference at Tryon … Ted’s notes
- Like the idea of creating a community space that everyone is separate but comes to
- Rico is interested in creating a yoga studio … friend G’s family became Western Sikhs from yoga recruitment
- Things that attributes of a space that are attractive:
- Good for meetings
- Yoga studios are beautiful, touch on the spiritual concerns that religions have permission to address.
- A place where we can hold services that people can come to
- Maker spaces as well… but they don’t seem to go hand in hand with yoga/spiritual spaces. Lots of noise
- Also interested in the farm idea (unfarming), being connected to the land in a permaculture sort of way
- Maybe just a warehouse space? Even a yoga studio is somewhat disconnected from all the others
- Excited to talk to Andrew about all these things…
- Yoga + outdoors can be a unique space… greenhouse space is somewhat outdoors and has the aesthetics of outdoors.
- I like those things … sounds like a lot of stuff
- Rico also mentioned the idea of a maker space / coworking space
- I wanted to create a community space that was a bar/restaurant (disaster related)
- Kind of a tongue in cheek joke thing … play movies that are disaster genre etc
- Everyone in the restaurant would be disaster certified
- Could hold meetups there
- Encourage everyone to get involved
- If there actually is a disaster you’ve got a kitchen and can be a hub for disaster coordination
- Combining all of these things into one you’d need a city block of sorts
- All of these are good ideas, but where do you start
- Yoga and co-working could be combined nicely ... People come do yoga and do work and then leave
- Garden farming situation with yoga would work
- Think of Breitenbush … that combines a bunch of these things
- The question I think is … doing it in Portland (what’s the state of Real Estate, what can you do to combine farming and buildings)
- I don’t know how everyone would feel about having a place you can meet and be merry
- The place I think about is Lucky Lab
Brandon:
Shawn:
Brandon proposes that we overtly go into research mode, pull in Rico, and create as an artifact of universe, some kind of graphic of connected communities. A visual guide to the potential networks and get the information to avoid duplicating efforts. Molly Winters does graphics and knows a lot of these communities. Would be good to employ for the creation of this graphic.
- Build a rough map of what is already present in Portland related to the many missions of SolSeed, gather information about what their mission in.
?: The things I see are either back to the land
- There is something in the yin and the yang (technology and the nature)
What does a place that could survive and be helpful look like?
- There are enough people who know how to do things
- People who know what they are doing can find what they need
- You’re not going to be on someone else’s space where you might get kicked out
- Radio communication so that you can be useful and reach other people
- I think having a repository of information (preserving knowlege)
- That doesn’t really become super important unless you have a really long scale collapse
- It would still be good to have documents on hand
Evaluation
- Shawn … lot’s of stuff to talk about do and research … slightly overwhelmed … good to not be overwhelmed by one’s self
- Brandon … Enjoying being overwhelmed with you (Shawn)
Closing Blessing
May we continue to find the space and energy to build as what we see as our greatest future. --Blessed Be
