In other words: when the situation is grim and the odds are against us, hope keeps us fighting because we believe, however foolishly, that we are going to make it through. Sometimes, hope means accepting that things may well get worse before they get better, and indeed that they may get better precisely because catastrophe will force us learn from our terrible mistakes (see Cautious Optimism).
