Shelly Interviewing Brandon re: Church Survey

Shelley is going to ask Jerry (and Ben will ask Judy and/or Steve; and Brandon will ask Ted) these questions, with the goal of deciding whether or not SolSeed should become a church/religion:

  1. When you think of the word "religion", what do you think of?
  2. When you hear the word "religion", what feelings come up? (ex. angst, belonging) Is your response mostly positive or mostly negative, or some of both?
  3. How important has religion been in your life so far on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being no effect whatsoever, and 5 is the most meaningful parts of my life have been associated with religion, and it's hard to imagine my life without it.
  4. [Explain the circles of commitment.] Then ask, "Most of us spend about 80% of our energy and resources on ourselves and our family (except for taxes). The remaining 20% of our resources might be seen as devoted to more external project/groups such as hobbies, religious groups, nonprofits, your neighborhood. Devout religious people spend one day in seven plus 10% of their gross income on their religious pursuits. What comes closest to a similar niche for you (on what do you spend your 10%?)
  5. What do you think about ritual/ceremony?
  6. What do you think about the concept of a "community of purpose?"
  7. If SolSeed was not a religion, would you become more involved? For example, weekly on the business call taking a small number of TODOs each week?
  8. If SolSeed was a religion, would you become more involved? For example, participating in the weekly service? or, the weekly business call?

Space Elevator Conference next steps

  • David made a couple of edits ... work on welcoming him to the wiki
  • Sam texted Brandon asking for his ideas on NASA challenges

Moving Planet

Permit application: Permit process:

  • We don't need insurance coverage for a free permit, but Brandon found an option

NASA challenge ideas

Related to the orbital railway

  • SMES loop challenge 50 meters in diameter, store 1 GWh of energy
  • Create a pipe with a vacuum in it and with one end open
  • Create a huge discharge of energy that can go on and off over and over again
    • Power switching of huge amounts of energy
  • Create a shuttle (of the weaving variety) that goes back and forth using EM forces (coil gun) with very low losses ... maybe actually weave things (for interests sake)
  • Create a small scale storage loop (using launch loop technology ... moving mass)
  • Store 1 GWh of energy and provide a controlled release of all of it in 1 sec or less

SpaceWiki direction

  • We want more and better content
    • Pick one article ... we'll barn-raise that article
      • University Nanosat Program
      • AIAA
      • JP Aerospace
      • Robert H. Goddard

High Level ... sweeping generalizations

We want more and better content

  • Go to conferences (try to inspire people there to add content)
    • Hasn't been very successful
    • Is there still something we can do at conferences that are worthwhile (SpaceVision October 27-30th)
  • Have contests
    • The first one was quite successful in terms of quantity
    • Might create competitiveness that limits the concept of community
    • On the other hand, might make the individual teams (SEDS chapters) feel more like a community, and they might like us for having inspired that
  • Hire piece-work writers (ala. (this is v2 of icannwiki))
    • Brandon doesn't want to spend money on this until we make some progress
  • Invite people to barn-raise ... create a focal point that the community points toward
    • So as to create the feeling of having a community in the first place
  • Identify our best articles, classify them (rate them) using the Quality Scale, and then identify tier 2 (and improve them to tier 1)

Sustainability of our programs

  • Sponsors
  • Write articles for a fee

Barn Raising Program

When: Where: (an etherpad with chat)

  1. Prepare the entire program
  2. Send out an email to the entire membership of SpaceWiki ... inviting them to participate in the program
  3. Add all opt-in's to the barnraiser's email group
  4. ... (work on this more later)

How to communicate about the barn-raising (without spamming).

  • Twitter: spacewiki
  • Facebook: spacewiki group
  • [spacewiki-barnraisers] email group

  • Shelley ... still sad that I messed up
  • Ben ... was too sleepy during the call, which was a problem
  • Brandon ... depressed, not feeling like doing anything
