Leader: Who would like to share?

The participants briefly update each other on how they're doing and what's going on in their lives.

Opening Ritual

Each season has an end and when it ends, the next season begins. At these times we celebrate the change of season by doing a special double service.

We gather to mark the passing of a week
To align our hearts as one.

(Light the Sol Candle)

Wilderness ... still ... wilderness ...
And then ... <gasp> ... civilization!
People. Warm-blooded. Social. Tool-users. Talking.
Nations coalesce.
In the fertile lands, cities are born.
And for every city ... there is a story!

(Open book sign)

Cities grew out of farming, the first massive division of labour

(plant 3 seeds in a straight row in a dish of soil)

Making Scientists and Priests possible
Allowing Artisans to evolve into Industry

(Turn gears)

Cities were fertilized by religion,
Beliefs that bind bands into cities
Beliefs that infuse cities with community

(ASL sign for belief but modified: [1] instead of clasping your own hand at the end of the sign, clasp those of the people next to you (or reach toward the screen to 'clasp' those in other locations on Skype)

Then came science!

(Pour water from one beaker to another)

The practice of seeking truth through experience.
The upward spiral of knowledge

(The ASL sign for knowledge: right hand open, fingers together palm down, tab above right brow twice [2] Then sweep the hand through an upward spiral until arm is extended directly up.)

Finally, democracy emerged!

(Ballot stuffing motion as in ASL for VOTE: [3])

Making striving for their self-chosen destinies,
Freely available to all living citizens.

(ASL for Freedom like in Spirit of Life)

Farming. Religion. Science. Freedom.
From Wilderness ... Civilization!

The Reading

Let us imagine.

You are in a rich green forest. Dappled sunlight filters down through the thick boughs above you and plays on the bracken by your feet. Dark green moss coats the tree trunks. There is a lake nearby and the light reflected from the waves dances about in the trees echoing the sunlight on the ground.

Your elephant is grazing on the abundance beside you. You can feel her warm rough flank with your hand. She looks at you with her keen grey eye and you feel her love for you. Look into her eye and feel your love for her. You are her and she is you and your love for each other is your self love from which wells up all your compassion and caring for this forest.

Now you notice the moss on a nearby tree has shadows in it that resemble the form a strong, proud woman. The shadows shift as you walk toward the moss, accompanied by your curious elephant and you see that they are not projected onto the moss but that the moss itself is in the shape of the woman. But as you step closer, you see that your eyes were fooled for there is a woman standing half in the moss and she is looking at you. Now she steps toward you with such grace and power that you know you are in the presence of someone more noble than anyone you have ever met before. But you feel no fear or intimidation for she is so full of love and caring that you can feel it exuding toward you. In her presence, your breath feels clean and pure, any thirst or hunger you felt is satiated and replaced with a feeling of calm joy.

And you speak to her, "Gaia help me instill in my elephant a deep respect for all the Life that struggled through eons here on Earth to create all the Life that is. Help us to love, with every instinctive reaction, all the Life that is, not only the oaks and whales and gibbons who feed our imaginations but also the poison ivy and leaches and lice which challenge the borders of our circle of care."

And she speaks to you, "Well spoken, Little One." and she turns to your elephant, "You know in your heart that when you act out of respect for all life that is, I approve. You know that when you slip and consume more possibilities than you need or cheer for a downward spiral, I am here to clean your soul and gently guide you back to the right path. You know the right path and you can anticipate my approval when you think about walking it. You desire my approval so strongly. Let that social desire guide your step."

Your elephant is enthralled by her speech and her beauty and her nobility. You speak to her again, "Help us to see with every glance not just what is but what can be. Remind us when we see some wiggling, creeping creature scurrying across the ground that our ancestors were once vermiform some 500 millions years ago. Show us what possibilities 500 more million years might draw from that tiny being."

And Gaia replies, "You know your history, Little One." and she caresses your elephant's forehead as she speaks, looking directly into her eyes, "Can you imagine the miraculous possibilities that I can bring forth in far less than 500 million years?" She reaches into the thick leaf mold on the forest floor and holds up a millipede, "In 100 million years, I could shape this tiny crawler into a majestic flyer with wings wide enough and breasts strong enough to carry even you aloft, elephant." She snatches a fly out of the air and opens her hand. The fly contentedly cleans its eyes with its forelegs while resting on her graceful hand. "In 50 million years, I could teach this little flyer to build computers and rockets and compose operas." With the slightest undulation of her palm, she sets the fly aloft and then she reaches down and picks a seed from a poison ivy plant, "In 10 million years, with the help of minds like yours, I can teach this seed to grow almost anywhere in the universe."

Your elephant trumpets proudly. You speak to her again, "Help us to relax our worries about the atrocities that humanity might inflict upon alien worlds if released from the gravitational bonds of Earth."

And Gaia replies, "The enigma of my power is that I work with life and death. I cannot stop atrocities any more than I can evolve a new species without killing those I do not select. Instead feel the feverous desire I am instilling in your belly, to enable a future for those majestic descendants of your vermiform cousins, a future of ever growing possibilities, a future of Viventibus Galaxia."

Your elephant trumpets again. But you feel that it is time to say farewell, "Thank you Gaia for this visit. We will hold it in our memories until you can visit again. My elephant will await you in this lush landscape which we must now allow to fade into our subconscious minds."

Silent contemplation

Leader: Please join me for seven minutes of silence while we contemplate ...

(Service Leader rings the bell)

(Service Leader rings the bell again at the end of the seven minutes)

Leader: Who would like to share?

The participants take turns talking about what they were thinking about during the contemplation.

Closing Ritual

Repartum is the seventh Liturgical Season in the SolSeed Movement's Liturgical Calendar. It symbolizes human care for the life from Earth. It runs from the Fall Equinox to Mid Fall. During this season the Weekly Service Calls use the following opening ceremony:

We gather to mark the passing of a week
To align our hearts as one.

(Light the Sol candle)

A Hurting World ... everywhere ... Pain and Loss …
But is it ... <gasp> ... the pain of rebirth?

<Baby cradling motion>

Farming. Religion. Science. Freedom.
A civilization aching with conflict, yet bursting with potential.
Will we learn to tell a new story?
A New Story where we are parts of Gaia.
A New Story where we contribute to her flourishing!

<make book-opening motion>

This story is about letting go
Abandoning the delusion that we are separate from Nature
Abandoning our attachment to our existing civilization
Sparking a new story into being
A New Story where a reborn civilization flourishes
in alliance with the rest of Gaia

<hold up a Gaia mask in front of our faces>

Next we learn to preserve and regenerate
Both keeping wild places wild
And wilding degraded places to bloom with life again
Speeding Gaia's recovery from the losses we have inflicted

<Pour grass, potpourri flower petals, and maybe some small leaves onto the Gaia statue> (the more diversity the better as Gaia is healed by regeneration of diversity)

Then we learn to empower Gaia
Contributing greater ability to our Goddess
To thrive in greater profusion
To thrive in new places on the Earth

<float an ice cube and a maple seed or pine seed on water in a bowl>

Finally, we learn to spread life beyond Earth
Making millions of barren worlds freely available
To grow new biospheres, Gaia's children

<shower mixture onto a stone the first sabbath of the season and then an additional stone each subsequent sabbath>

A New Story of Life; Life regenerating, Life empowering, Life spreading and flowering.
From a hurting world … Rebirth!

Reading of the SolSeed Creed

Please respond to the portions of the Creed highlighted in bold in unison:

Life is precious.
It has always been precious,
it will always be precious.
Life exuberant
bursting through boundaries
to flower and spread
creates the conditions for more Life,
in an Upward Spiral
of ever-growing possibilities.
As you are alive, and I am alive,
and in kinship with all other beings
who call Terra home,
we are Gaia --
the body of all Life.
Gaia's bursting through boundaries is a painful and joyful process.
It is the pain of Earth giving rebirth to herself.
It is the joy of a myriad new possibilities emerging.
The Destiny of Gaia
is to take root and flower amongst the stars --
to give birth to a family of living worlds.
As intelligent sparks of Gaia,
we are called to express her excellent nature,
we are called to attend the Rebirthing and the Great Birthing.
We who answer this call
dedicate ourselves to Gaia,
We join together
in a community of practice
to align our words and actions
with our highest aspirations.
Through awesome experiences
of cosmic, biological, and cultural creativity,
we awaken within ourselves and others
the Cosmic Religious Feeling
that ignites wonder,
fosters compassion, and
inspires invention.
Our three sacred duties are to
embrace Passion,
cultivate Empathy, and
pursue Wisdom,
So that our being honors Gaia
and our striving hastens the Great Birthing.
Passion drives us.
Without Passion
Empathy and Wisdom are lethargic.
I pledge to stoke the fire in my belly,
to compassionately care for my inner elephant ---
to really be me, Happy in the Sun!
Empathy is transcendent.
Without Empathy,
Passion and Wisdom are evil.
I pledge to love others as I love myself,
to consider their needs as if they were my own --
to Grow Ours, not just Get Mine!
Wisdom is effective.
Without Wisdom,
Passion and Empathy are reckless.
I pledge to train my elephant through regular practice,
to stand ready to transform my worldview in the face of new evidence --
to cultivate sound instincts.
Through Passion, Empathy, and Wisdom
we have come to know that:
We are Gaia's People --
children of the Earth and Sun,
awakened by starlight,
discovering --
We Bring Life!

Closing Words

Leader: We extinguish this flame, but not the light of truth, the warmth of community or the fires of commitment ... these we carry in our hearts until we are together again.

Leader extinguishes the candle with the Candle Snuff

Leader: May your season be blessed with life and love. Blessed be.
