Quotes for the Day
- Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven
- --Matthew 12:32
- the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all
- --John 14:26
- 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
- 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
- --Acts 2:3-4
- Instead, if the brancher (the term “batter” is both ambiguous and inappropriate in view of the equipment changes we found necessary to make the game work at all) misses a pitch, he merely picks up the sock himself and tosses it back to the pitcher. This lets you have all four defensive players in the field, which is much more efficient in use of resources, another proof that baseball doesn’t scale.
- The thing that finally condemns the entire “baseball” idea, however is this: even with all these improvements, the game is no fun at all.
- We tried baseball, and it didn’t work.
- --Ron Jeffries, | "We Tried Baseball and It Didn't Work"
Contemplation for the day
You are riding Your Elephant through a dense fog. You look down and you cannot even see the ground beneath your elephant's feet. It is as if there is nothing in the universe except you and your elephant. But then a shape looms ahead. As it you come closer to it you see that it is a marble statue of a spiral galaxy. Your elephant sniffs it a little before passing around it and continuing on your way. Then yet another shape looms out of the fog up ahead. Again as you come closer to it you see what it is, in this case a huge muscular heart floating in the air and pumping in long slow pulses. Again your elephant sniffs it and then passes it by coming next upon a huge spiral shell looming out of the fog. Another sniff and onward. The next thing to appear out of the fog is a large brain. As your elephant sniffs it, an ethereal face appears out of the brain and cries in a distant ghostly voice, "I think, therefore I am." Your elephant is frightened and hurries on.
Now many pairs of glowing blue lights appear and as you approach them you see that they are the eyes of Sophia, the many-bodied goddess-child of wisdom. The bodies of Sophia are standing in a circle backs together looking out into the fog and you get the feeling they are fearful of it. After what you have seen looming out of the fog you can understand why.
They speak together as one voice, "Holy Spirit, we are trying to understand Your true nature."
In your mind, the knowledge appears that the spirit has spoken inside you, "I was sent by the Father to guide you out of sin."
One of the Sophia's speaks to the second one standing beside her, "'Sent by the father' is often the description. The father, Yahweh sends the Holy Spirit down from Heaven."
The second one replies, "So the Holy Spirit is a messenger god like Hermes?"
In your mind, the knowledge again appears that the Spirit has spoken, "I am not the messenger but the message, I am Yahweh's Love and I fill the faithful."
Sophia speaks together, "No that doesn't make sense. We know who Yahweh is. He is the personification of the indifferent deterministic nature of the universe. He doesn't have any love for the faithful."
Gaia steps out of the fog and places a loving hand on the forehead of the second Sophia, "I don't love you either but I care for you, do I not. In the presence of metaphorium, 'caring for' and 'loving' can be almost indistinguishable."
Sophia speaks as one being in response, "Gaia, you are different from Yahweh. You do not personify the indifferent inanimate universe but the Living World which maintains the conditions for us to thrive and is full of movement and purpose and meaning."
Gaia laughs, "But I am pre-determined. The quantum information present at the Big Bang is the same quantum information present in me. I am just an outcropping of the rock that is Yahweh."
The second Sophia speaks to the first, "Gaia is emergent from the deterministic physics of the universe. She is different and the same as physics. She is biology. She is the physics of a system so complex that we cannot understand how the mathematics of the physics can be solved to predict the behaviour of the biology."
The first Sophia replies, "You aren't making sense."
And the second one answers, "Well it is all so confusing isn't it?"
The first Sophia says, "Yes it is and it isn't helping us understand what the Holy Spirit is the personification of."
In your mind, you suddenly know that the Spirit has spoken again, "I fill people. I give them power. I give them the power to speak in tongues."
A third Sophia says, "So perhaps the Holy Spirit is the process by which language emerges from the physics of our brains."
A fourth Sophia laughs and says, "But that process is just the process we call emergence."
The third one laughs also, "So the Holy Spirit is the personification of emergence!"
The first one laughs also, "Yes, emergence emerges from the reductionist deterministic nature of the universe, from Yahweh, just as the Holy Spirit is always being sent from heaven by the Father, from Yahweh."
The second one claps her hands for joy, "And emergence is the process by which people are filled with language and ideas and consciousness. That is the other theme in the Bible about the Holy Spirit, that it wells up inside people and produces ideas and speech and vivaciousness. All of these things are products of the emergent nature of the universe."
In your mind, you suddenly know that the Spirit has spoken yet again, "I lead the faithful away from sin."
Sophia answers as one, "Yes. And toward Sin. Inspiration is emergent and the inspiration toward living in accordance with Gaia's laws is emergent but so is the inspiration toward living against Gaia's laws."
In your mind, you know that the Spirit answers, "When you are tempted toward sin, that is not I, but Satan, which has given you those thoughts."
Sophia answers again, "No, it is you. Emergence is emergence. We know by having a personal relationship with Gaia, what is sinful and which behaviour is virtuous because we know what pleases her and what does not. But emergence doesn't care. Supernova which vapourize entire biospheres are as emergent as symbiotic relationships which create upward spirals of ever growing possibilities. Anger is as emergent as love."
In your mind, you know that the Spirit is displeased, "I will not be spoken to in that way. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven."
Gaia answers, "See what she means."
Stay tuned for the next episode of Sophia and the Gods of Bible. Is the Holy Spirit really as indifferent as Yahweh? Will Sophia speak in tongues? Will You get a word in edgewise? Find out in Sophia and Jesus...
