SolSeed and Religion
- "How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, 'This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant!'"
- - Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot
- "The truth is, preparing for interstellar travel and then sending out ships filled with colonists is bound to be a job so long, thankless, expensive, and difficult that I suspect that only a religion could do it. A lot of people will find ways to make money from it. That might get things started. But it will take something as essentially human and as essentially irrational as a religion to keep them focused and keep it going--for generations if it takes generations."
- - Octavia Butler, Parable of the Talents
Is SolSeed a religion?
SolSeed is currently reconsidering whether or not to organize as a religion. We're certainly not a traditional religion, given that we embrace science and don't believe in gods or supernatural forces, but we are also embracing the power of religious ritual as an effective psychological tool to motivate ourselves. This ritual helps us be happier through feeling connected to others and to a cause that's larger than ourselves, and regularly motivates us to meet our commitments. We also consider "reverence for life" as a core tenet, while looking forward to the spiritual Destiny of acting as seeds to spread life to other worlds.
Here is a dialogue that would help explain why we chose to become a religion. We use a metaphor to explain what kind of religion we are and avoid mistaken assumptions: "SolSeed is a branch of the Church of Science."
Can I join the SolSeedMovement and keep my existing religion?
Regardless of the above decision, SolSeed makes no statements about God or the supernatural, other than that we, the founding members (Brandon, Shelley, and Ben), don't believe in such things. In looking for new members, we don't discriminate on the basis of religion (though we do discourage magical thinking), and we think the ideals and goals of SolSeed ought to be integratable without conflict into any kind of faith.
