Check-in (gratinews)

  • Brandon … I ran 12 ½ miles today on the beach … that feels like an accomplishment … running on sand is a little harder
  • Ben … today I went to the first meetup of a new meetup group called “World Builders” (brandon says Wow!) … so that was cool
  • Eric … I gave my sermon about SolSeed today at UUFO, and people loved it! I got lots of people saying they were really inspired … I doubt we'll get anybody joining SolSeed, but it was good.

Newsletter images

Ben: I put together 8 images representing the whole liturgical year

  • There's a couple options for Viventibus Mundos
    • Eric: I like the Stanford torus better … its colors match more
    • Brandon: I like it too, but it may be harder for Muggles to parse
    • Ben: I can add stars around it to make it clearer that it's in space
  • Brandon: Can you add some green sparks in the galaxies for Viventibus Galaxia?
    • Ben: None of the other images has any metaphorical elements, so I hesitate to do that

Ben: Should I use the logos for the Kindred groups?

  • Brandon: Should be fine, but make it clear that "The Human Purpose: to Propagate Life" isn't something we're saying … maybe add link lines
    • Ben: And circles around the logos?
  • Eric: Consider putting the group names next to the logos since people might not know what they are otherwise

Debrief on “the article” … next steps for outreach

http://humanisticpaganism.com/2014/09/26/why-im-religious-but-not-spiritual-by-eric-saumur/

Brandon: This is a major bright spot; we should try to learn from it and build off it

  • Brandon: First thing to do is fix the analytics so we know how many people clicked the links to our website in the article
  • Ben: You or I could post on Humanistic Paganism as well
    • Eric: Putting me as a blogger on their list feels like an invitation for me to submit more
  • Other places to publish?

Brandon: This is a solid experiment because we closed the loop by adding a quantitative measurement … let's keep doing that

  • Eric: We're not totally sure the measurements of increased interest were caused by this article

Project Work

Steward Circle:

  • Tensions:
    • Of the people who are actually working on SolSeed, we’ve identified three increasingly deep levels of commitment and accountability
      • active members: those who are occasionally active
      • contributing members: those who are deeply committed (they’ve contributed meaningfully for each of twelve consecutive months)
      • stewards: contributing members responsible for maintaining the integrity of the founders’ vision

We get 2 free circles, the third circle costs $35/month … so representing this three tiered structure in GlassFrog circles is expensive

    • There isn’t any operational difference between active and contributing members, so representing this three tiered structure in GlassFrog circles is cumbesome.
  • Proposal: Alter the contributing member policy to rename “contributing member” to “sustaining member” to avoid confusing those in the contributor circle with those who are “sustaining”.
  • Proposal: Make no GlassFrog distinction between contributors … call everyone who works on SolSeed a contributor (regardless of duration and depth of commitment).  Add “restricted to sustaining members” as a policy requirement to roles as needed.

Steward Circle:

  • Tension: Once we officially organize we’ll become susceptible to organizational capture by other interests that don’t share the founding vision.  We should be conservative now and open it up later.
  • Proposal:
    • The following domains are reserved for the Stewards Circle (not to be devolved)
      • The SolSeedCreed and other core expressions of values and beliefs including our Highest Aspirations
    • The following accountabilities are reserved for the Stewards Circle (not to be devolved)
      • Appointing the Lead Link for the Contributors Circle
      • Appointing new Stewards
      • Determining the basic structure of the organization (i.e. how Stewards are selected, what sub-circles to create under Stewards, and even whether or not to keep using Holacracy)

Contributors Circle:

  • Tensions:
    • We need to figure out what (if anything) we’re going to do about convening our Kindred
    • The Fall equinox has better weather in the NW than the summer solstice (the last few weeks at the beach have been glorious for example)
    • We don’t all live in the NW, and it is nice to rotate where we do our major in person event each year
  • Proposals:
    • Rotate the location of our major in person event to be hosted by each of the stewards in turn (Brandon, Ben, and Eric)
    • When in the NW, hold the major summer event on the fall equinox rather than on the summer solstice?
    • When in Ottawa, hold the major summer event at mid-summer instead of a solstice or equinox? (Eric)
    • Let’s convene our kindred groups by holding an attractive “kindred planning summit” in 2015 to plan for kindred 2016.  As the hosts of the kindred planning summit, we cover all the onsite costs for food and lodging to create an atmosphere of hospitality.

Evaluation

  • Ben … I was glad to make progress on stuff and feeling the enthusiasm about the fact that we are making progress.
  • Brandon … I always enjoy the project work … I feel excited about our recent bright spots.
  • Eric … yeah, me too … I’m excited about the recent bright spots.  They seem brighter than anything in recent memory.
