Check In

  • Brandon ... got good gumption going again
  • Ben ... been undermotivated, partly because catching up on email was such a chore, along the way I encountered a scathing critique of The Righteous Mind (will cause me to righteously pre-judge some things), confirmed impression that a blogger claiming to be a radical is actually an apologist for our moderate president
  • Sequoia ... sleeping ... did a scale-model walk of the solar system this morning
  • Shelley ... on call, will hopefully join us later

Solstice

  • Whatever happened was the only thing that could have
    • We'll be smoother with the Solstice ceremony and the triathlon next year
    • Triathlon ... felt like we were pretending to have the triathlon for the kids, parents might be perfectly ok with that ... others may not be
      • Might make sense to have two parallel events (either simultaneous on separate courses or one after the other), one of which would be more competitive
      • On the other hand, trying to go super fast leads to injuries
  • Brandon: I really liked the triathlon
  • Unconference:
    • Ben: a little sad about the list of topics we didn't get to, dome building activities were fun, I thought I might have a philosophical discussion combined with sand castle building
    • Brandon: Friends of SolSeed will probably only participate on weekends ... if we want only the most dedicated, committed people, scheduling on weekdays will accomplish that

Space conferences

Space Elevator Conference

  • Ben's paper is due in final form on July 20th
    • Brandon suggests flipping the directions of both axes on the charts
  • The PowerPoint presentation is due on August 17th
  • The conference starts on August 25th

100yss

  • Brandon and Shelley aren't sure they're going ... the decision won't be final until they actually buy plane tickets or send in a paper (abstracts are due on July 21st)
    • Shelley: Maybe Brandon should submit an abstract and still not make a firm decision about whether to attend until August
  • Paper ideas:
    • Brandon ... "Elephants: The Key to the Stars"
    • Ben ... revised version of Space Elevator Conference paper
    • Ben ... revised version of talk for We the People Power festival
    • Ben ... expanded version of Sol 2012 session presenting Flight in a Cage and asking for feedback (first arc of the story will be about how to build a starship)
    • Shelley ... theology and meaning, seeing space travel as "The Destiny", deriving meaning for our day to day lives from having a larger, higher purpose

Evaluation

  • Shelley ... I feel good about the progress on the One Page Plan ... it would be exciting to be green across the board for a quarter's goals
  • Brandon ... I want G, G, G, G, G ... I want to focus, finish a project and get the benefit from it sooner, rather than working on a bunch of things in parallel
  • Ben ... I like having multiple projects even if we don't make as much progress as we would like on all of them, in the ideal world we would make equal progress on them ... emotionally, we don't like cutting things from the quarterly plan
